     Observing the city, I encounter signs of devastation. Housing and stores are evacuated and hollow, objects are left unattended rusting and rotting. Construction sites are abandoned, buildings are being demolished. And more destruction and malfunctions happen simultaneously everywhere in the city. Through them I detect lives that are hidden behind the physical scale they create.

     Cities have become spectacular, but each life in them seems to be experiencing their very own, personalized breakdown. Lives that are going through disasters try to navigate their way out. Recovery is a hard task since no one knows the right way to do it. Sometimes it is even unclear where the damage has been done. With all the difficulties, individuals are being crushed between scattered life and the pressure to rebuild it.

     The on-going topic of my work since 2015 is painting the city and objects in it, with very faint traces of life. Preparing for The Other Art Fair Brooklyn, I sketched some Brooklyn and Manhattan landscapes. Surprisingly, they somehow looked like my previous works based in Seoul. Probably because New York is the first mega-city ever to emerge in modern times, and Seoul is resembling it. New York must be an interesting place to work out my subject because it is the largest city in the world with fun but chaotic neighborhoods.

     Seeking to transfer my observation into a painting, I start with covering a canvas with a background color using oil. They are usually in various shades of red or pink. Red and pink look unstable and full of bizarre energy when used as background. Several black colors are used when a calm atmosphere is needed. Objects are often painted in exaggerated colors to make them look strange, unstable, unnatural, and alive at the same time. What I capture from a scene is the bleakness of the city, or the vague dynamics underneath the opaque surface of it. Or it could be both in one place.

     My work mainly focuses on the exterior of a building, or byproducts of its construction. To me, tall buildings seem to be the highlights of modern urban civilization. They are where the resources such as material, time, labor are concentrated, and where many lives are inhabited. Cities expand through establishing them, sometimes extinguishing them or leaving them to become urban ruins. In those scenes, I find trails of shattered lives. I try to pick up this trail and carefully place it on the canvas. As a result, my work becomes a city-scape painting with vivid colors and subtle details.

2023. 6. 개인전 노트

 2021년부터 2023년까지 제작한 약 20점의 그림에서는 일상 및 휴식에서 마주친 사소한 풍경과 사물을 관찰하는 기쁨을 드러낸다. 자연스럽게 우거진 식물, 강렬한 햇빛에 반응하는 채도, 익살스러운 소품과 같은 대상은 나에게 즐거움을 준다. 이러한 즐거움이란 대부분 시각적인 만족감에 근거하지만 때로는 정서적인 반응을 일으킨다. 여유, 다정함, 평화로움, 장난기, 실없는 우스움 등 작은 감정의 단편을 자세히 들여다보는 과정을 통해 대상을 목격했을 때 느꼈던 정황을 다시 체험하고 해석한다. 결과물의 형태로서의 그림은 일상이나 휴식에 대한 개인적인 기록처럼 기능하여 그림에 표현된 대상을 돌아볼 때 지나간 시간에 느꼈던 좋은 기억을 떠올린다.

 두 전시실을 연결하는 벽면에 걸려있는 15 x 15 cm 작업들 중 일부는 AI 페인팅 프로그램이 만들어 낸 이미지를 캔버스 위에 그대로 옮겨 그린 것이다. 일부는 직접 촬영한 사진을 캔버스 크기와 사물의 느낌을 고려하여 회화적인 변형을 거쳐 제작하였다. AI가 만들어낸 이미지와 인간이 만들어낸 이미지 사이에 어떠한 차이도 없다는 점이 페인터로서의 역할을 자문하게 만든다. 또한 흔히 인간 고유의 영역으로 구분되는 감성적인 측면마저도 AI가 모방함에 따라 인간만의 특유한 점과 기술의 경계를 뒤섞는 작용을 의도하였다. AI가 그린 그림을 보면서 재미를 느끼는 동시에 페인팅을 하는 사람으로서 이보다 더 나은 그림을 그릴 수 있을지 고민하게 된다.

 안쪽 전시실의 그림들은 개인적으로 느끼고 있는 막연한 불안을 투영하여 붉은 배경에 폐허와 공사장을 그린 것이다. 만성적인 불안의 원인을 생각해 보건대 어떠한 경제적인 불안에 대한 모호한 감각이 아닐까 추측한다. 의식주 전반에 걸친 불안정한 느낌이라고도 할 수 있다. 이러한 감각이 가장 극대화되는 지점이 거대한 건물, 즉 현대 도시 문화의 핵심이 방치되거나 쇠락하는 모습을 목격할 때이다. 내가 느끼기에 건물이라는 대상은 기술, 물자, 시간 등이 집약된 문명의 정점이면서 동시에 언제까지고 버티고 서 있을 것 같은 존재이다. 이런 대상이 파괴되거나 마치 처음부터 폐허를 향해 지어올려진 듯이 앙상하게 건설되고 있는 모습은 나에게는 어떠한 피해갈 수 없는 경제적인 불황, 더 나아가서 인간이 이룩해 놓은 문명 세계의 붕괴를 암시하는 것처럼 보인다.

 나의 작업에서 반드시 자연과 도시가 이분법적인 관계를 지니는 것은 아니다. 그보다는 그림을 대하는 태도에 따라 갈래가 나뉘는 것을 이번 전시를 통해 발견하였다. 2015년경부터 지속해온 폐허 작업을 할 때에는 굉장히 신경이 날카롭고 예민한 상태를 지속해 왔다. 반면 이번 전시를 준비하면서 어떠한 대상의 다양한 측면과 그에 따르는 개인적인 감흥을 자세히 살펴보는 훈련을 거칠 수 있었다. 그 과정에서 발견한 형태들이 나에게 작은 기쁨을 주듯 관객에게도 즐겁게 보이길 바란다.
